An equation is a mathematical sentence that contains two expressions connected by an equals sign, indicating that the two expressions are equal to each other. Equations are used when some information is unknown. This unknown information is represented using symbols or letters that are referred to as variables.
If an equation such as a+2=5 is given, then the value of the pro-numeral "a" can be found, which is called solving the equation.
Sometimes mathematical operations are written in words. In order to begin the solving process the equation must first be written using mathematical symbols.
